Another type of holiday takes place in Bolivia during the month of December. It is a holiday that the future of our country depends on, a holiday of democracy.
Unlike in other countries around the world, in Bolivia all people who are legally competent are required to register to vote (at least in the country). This means that everyone of voting age must vote unless he or she is incapacitated for health or legal reasons or is too old.
The general population is anxiously awaiting the opportunity to decide the country’s path ahead. Election campaigns have been bombarding the communication media for at least a month, and television and news programs talk only of the December 6th elections.
This is the first time that Bolivia will hold elections under a “biometric” system that checks on registered voters. It will also be the first time Bolivians living outside the country will be able to vote.
In addition, under the new Bolivian Constitution that was approved by His Excellency President Evo Morales Aima, for the first time the electoral system permits re-election and a system of a second term to enable continuity in government plans and programs and assurance of democratic assurance of popular interests.
Whatever the results of the election may be, we can say that all the people of Bolivia are hopeful for new and old political promises, social, union and professional recognition or simply for a prosperous and shiny future for our beloved country.
