OUR ARTISANS IN LEATHER

The Yavo brothers (Eusebio and Julian), with the help of their uncles and aunts, nephews and nieces make bags, backpacks and other accessories in leather and aguayo. There are 7 members in the Yavo family and they all work together in the workshop located in their house, in the city of El Alto.

Handicraft Process:

Each leather product has its own pattern and cardboard.
Every pattern has all the necessary information for its preparation, the areas where to cut, to make the perforations, the shape of the final product, etc.

The artisan puts the pattern over the leather piece and with a pencil, marks the contour and all the places where he should cut. Once the contours are marked, he proceeds to cut with a shaving blade transformed into a knife and a metal ruler, then he dyes the leather with natural colors.

After that, the stage of design and carving comes, the artisan uses nails and a hammer for this. If the model of the product has aguayo applications, the aguayo has to be cut and glued to the leather with strong glue. To avoid that the piece of aguayo falls off, the artisan will affirm the aguayo to the leather using a hammer.

Once the designs are finished, the product is sewed in a machine, then it is varnished and the leather piece is ready. The time of elaboration depends on the size and the complexity of the piece (a briefcase is easier to make than a purse).

All the products are hand made. In average every artisan makes one backpack per day.
